Mama's Moment of Moronity

I got up this morning and rushed around getting ready for work. I had to be there by 7am, which means I need to be out the door by 6:30. Period.

Well, just as I'm getting ready to head out the door, Anna wakes up and needs some attention. Morning hugs, check her forehead to see if she's still warm (which she is), reassure her that she'll be fine and leave instructions for her to drink lots of water and her Vernors, and I make it to the car at 6:38.

I drive like a bat out of hell to get there by 7am, and hit the clock at 6:59 which is definitely cutting close. As I walk in the door, my co-worker Mary asks "Why are you here? Isn't it early for you?"

"No, I work today. 7am to 3pm."

And Loetta, the actual 7am to 3pm person, pipes up, "Then can I go home?"

What???

So we check the schedule. I'm scheduled for the 10am-6pm shift.

D'oh! I have no idea what schedule I looked at, but it sure wasn't the right one. So, I hung out, had breakfast, checked a few news sites, and clocked in at 10am. And tomorrow? Rest assured, I checked that. 2:30pm-10:30pm. I start the evening shift tomorrow to get the differential. Hopefully it will help pay the bills. Or at least more of them more regularly.

So concludes this exciting episode of Mama's Moment of Moronity.

Once while traveling AI set the alarm oh the hotel room alarm clock without bothering to check if it showed the right time. When it went off I got up showered, shaved and got dressed wondering in a pre coffee fog why it was still so dark. Then I put on my watch and discovered it was 4:00 a.m.

After working a series of long shifts I got up one morning in a haze and drove 75 miles to the Hanford site only to find the guards laughing at my arrival, on Sunday. Oh well.

When I first arrived in Japan it was midsummer, August to be exact. I did the standard new arrival BS. I met my new shop chief and co-workers. They gave me a quick tour of my new unit and the base.

I finally got to sleep in my billeting room around 1130 p.m. I woke up at 3:30 and it was like high noon on any summer day. I was hungry so I showered, got dressed and headed to the food court at the base BX to get some grub. After walking the mile or so to the BX I found an empty parking lot and locked doors. I couldn't understand why the BX would be close at 4:00 on a weekday, so I headed back to the hotel. When I walked through the front door I asked the clerk what time the BX opened and she told me 10:00. I told her that it was closed and she broke into laughter. She said, of course it is silly, it is 4:00 in the morning. After giving her a really puzzled look she explained that in the summer time sunsrise in northern Japan is around 3:00 a.m.

With the jet lag and bright sun light it fooled me. It took the better part of a month to get used to sunlight at 3 in the morning.
