I also remember that a lot of Americans were supportive of Fidel's cause to liberate Cuba from Batista, they for the most part the unwitting dupes of Communism, which can't be said about Redford.

They didn't particularly hate Batista, but they felt that Castro could bring real democracy. They all regretted it when Castro took their businesses and ran them off the island.
